Shilajit resin changes with the weather. In summer it can feel soft and sticky. In winter it can turn hard and brittle. Both can be normal. This guide shows what good resin looks, smells and feels like, and what is not normal.

What normal resin looks like

  • Colour: dark brown to black, often glossy.
  • Texture: sticky and pliable when warm, firmer and brittle when cold.
  • Smell: earthy and a little smoky or bitter. It should not smell sweet or chemical.
  • In warm water: it dissolves slowly into a brown colour with little residue.

Why it is soft in summer and hard in winter

Resin softens with heat and hardens with cold. A jar left in a hot room, a car or direct sun can turn very soft and sticky. A jar in a cold room can turn so hard that it is difficult to scoop. Neither means it is bad.

What to do when it is too soft

  • Move it to a cooler, shaded place.
  • Close the lid tightly.
  • If it is very soft, leave the closed jar in a cool room for a while. Do not microwave it.

What to do when it is too hard

  • Leave the closed jar at room temperature for some time.
  • Use a clean, dry spoon. A little warmth from the hand can help you take a piece.

Signs that are not normal

  • Mould, a white fuzzy layer or a sour smell.
  • Visible sand, grit or plant fibres you can see and feel.
  • Resin that will not dissolve at all in warm water and leaves heavy sediment.
  • A smell of tar, sugar or perfume.

If you see any of these, stop using it and contact the seller. Our home checks are in the original vs fake shilajit guide.

Looks do not prove purity

Colour and texture alone cannot confirm purity. Only a lab report for the batch can. Ours are on the lab reports page. You can also read about semi-sun-dried and Aftabi grades, which differ in texture.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for shilajit to melt in summer?

Yes. Heat softens resin. Keep it in a cool, shaded place with the lid closed.

Should I keep shilajit in the fridge?

It is not required. A cool, dry cupboard is usually enough. Read the storage guide.

Does hard resin mean it has expired?

Not by itself. See does shilajit expire.

Quick answer

Good shilajit resin can look sticky, hard or melting depending on temperature. Texture alone does not prove purity.
