How to Read a Shilajit Lab Report

Any seller can say their shilajit is tested. These four checks tell you whether a report actually backs that up.

Check whose sample it is
The report should name the brand or company that sent the sample. A report for someone else's product proves nothing about the one you are buying.
Check the laboratory
Look for a named, independent laboratory you can look up yourself, not a test the seller ran on their own.
Read the heavy metal results
Lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium should each have a result. "Not detected", or a result below the stated limit, is what you want to see.
Look at the date
Shilajit is a natural product and batches differ, so a recent report tells you more than an old one.

What the Words on a Shilajit Lab Report Mean

Lab reports use short codes and units. Here is what the common ones mean, so you can read any shilajit or salajeet report with confidence.

ND (not detected): The substance was not found at or above the lowest level the lab's equipment can measure.
LOD and LOQ: Limit of detection and limit of quantification: the smallest amount the method can detect or measure reliably. A result shown as "<LOQ" is below that level.
ppm and mg/kg: Parts per million. 1 ppm is the same as 1 mg per kg. Heavy metal results are usually given in one of these units.
ppb and µg/kg: Parts per billion, a thousand times smaller than ppm. Used when the amounts measured are very small.
ICP-MS: An instrument that measures many metals at very low levels in a single run. Read what an ICP-MS test shows.
AAS: Atomic absorption spectroscopy, an older and widely used method for measuring one metal at a time.
CFU/g: Colony-forming units per gram, the unit for microbiological results such as total bacteria, yeast and mould.
Method and limit: The method is the standard procedure the lab followed. The limit is the maximum allowed value each result is compared against.

How to Check a Lab Report Is Genuine

Edited or borrowed reports are common in the shilajit market. These checks take a few minutes.

Look for a report number, date and lab details
A real report carries a unique report number, the date, the laboratory's name and address, and a signature or stamp.
Contact the laboratory yourself
Find the lab's phone number or email on its own website, not on the report, and ask it to confirm the report number.
Check the lab is accredited
Testing labs are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard for testing laboratories. In Pakistan, labs are accredited by PNAC, the Pakistan National Accreditation Council.
Watch for signs of editing
Mismatched fonts, missing pages, no date or a blurred logo are warning signs. Ask the seller for the original file.
