Most adults take 300 to 500 mg of shilajit per day, a pea-sized piece of resin dissolved in warm water or milk, usually in the morning. Studies used 250 mg twice daily or 500 mg once daily, so more is not needed. Beginners can start with half a pea for a week and should check with a doctor if on medicines.

For most adults, the answer to how much shilajit per day is a small, pea-sized piece of resin, roughly 300 to 500 mg, dissolved in warm water or milk once a day. The human studies we know of used 250 mg twice daily or 500 mg once daily, so there is no reason to go higher. Start at the low end, take it in the morning, and stay consistent rather than increasing the amount.
How Much Shilajit Per Day Is Enough?
A typical serving of pure resin is 300 to 500 mg a day, which is about the size of a pea or a small chickpea. That range lines up with the small amount of clinical research available:
- Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016: healthy men aged 45 to 55 took 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day (500 mg in total) for 90 days. Their total testosterone rose compared with the placebo group.
- Keller et al., Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 2019: active men took 500 mg a day for 8 weeks, and the shilajit group held on to more muscle strength after a fatiguing exercise test.
These are small studies, and a 2011 review by Wilson and colleagues in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology noted that much of shilajit's reported bioactivity still lacks substantial evidence. So treat shilajit as something that may support your health, not as a treatment. The studies do give a sensible ceiling, though: none of them used more than 500 mg a day, and taking more will not make it work faster. It is more likely to upset your stomach.
How many mg of shilajit per day for beginners?
If you have never used shilajit, begin with a smaller piece, roughly half a pea, for the first week. Watch how your stomach, sleep and energy respond. If everything feels fine, move up to a full pea-sized serving. Most people never need to go beyond that.
How to measure a pea-sized serving
Resin is sticky and changes texture with temperature, so "pea-sized" is a practical guide rather than an exact measurement. A few tips make it easier:
- Use the jar as your guide. A 10 g jar contains 10,000 mg. At 300 to 500 mg a day, it should last roughly 20 to 33 days. If your jar is finishing in a week or two, your pieces are too big.
- Weigh it once. If you own a small kitchen or jewellery scale that reads to 0.01 g, weigh a few pieces so you learn what 0.3 to 0.5 g looks like. After that, you can judge by eye.
- Firm it up first. In hot weather, a few minutes in the fridge makes soft resin easier to pinch off.
- Use the scoop or a clean, dry spoon. Moisture shortens shelf life, so never put a wet spoon or wet fingers in the jar.
Shilajit Dosage Table by Goal
There is no officially set dose for shilajit, and nobody can promise a result at any serving. The table below shows how people commonly take it, along with what research there is. Use it as a starting point, not as a prescription.
| Goal | Typical serving | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First week / beginner | About half a pea (around 150 to 250 mg) once a day | Lets you check how your stomach and sleep respond before taking a full serving. |
| General energy and daily wellness | 300 to 500 mg once a day | The usual pea-sized serving. Take it in the morning with warm water or milk. |
| Men's health and testosterone support | 250 mg twice a day, or 500 mg once a day | Matches the 2016 study in men aged 45 to 55. Results were modest and need more research. |
| Gym, strength and recovery | 500 mg once a day | Matches the 2019 study in active men. Take it in the morning or 30 to 60 minutes before training. |
| Older adults or a sensitive stomach | Start at around 250 mg, after food if needed | Speak to your doctor first if you take regular medicines. |
| Drops, gummies or honey sachets | Follow the label | These forms are pre-measured, so you do not need to estimate a piece of resin. |
Shilajit dosage for men
Men do not need a bigger dose than women. The 500 mg daily total used in the studies was split into two 250 mg servings in one trial and taken once a day in the other. Either way is fine, so pick the one you will stick with. If your main concern is stamina or erection problems, see a doctor as well: erection difficulties can be an early sign of heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure, and finding the cause matters more than any supplement.
How to Take Shilajit Resin: Step by Step
Learning how to use shilajit resin is simple once you have done it a few times:
- Warm a drink. Heat a cup of water, milk or herbal tea until it is warm but not boiling. Very hot liquid is not needed, and some people prefer to avoid it in case high heat affects the resin's natural compounds.
- Take your serving. Scoop a pea-sized piece (300 to 500 mg) with a clean, dry spoon or the scoop that came with your jar.
- Dissolve it. Drop it into the cup and stir for a minute or two until it has fully dissolved. Pure resin usually dissolves completely in warm liquid and turns the drink golden to dark brown.
- Drink it. Sip it slowly. The taste is earthy and slightly bitter. Adding a little honey or taking it in milk makes it easier.
- Close the jar. Seal it tightly and store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
You may read that you must never use a metal spoon. That is traditional advice, and we have not seen good evidence that a brief stir with a steel spoon causes harm. If you would rather follow the tradition, a wooden, plastic or bone spoon works just as well. For milk recipes and Urdu-language tips, see our guide on how to use shilajit with milk.
Best time to take shilajit
Most people take shilajit in the morning, either on an empty stomach or with breakfast. This keeps it away from bedtime, since some people say it keeps them awake at night. If you exercise, a serving 30 to 60 minutes before your workout is a common alternative. If an empty stomach makes you feel queasy, take it after a light meal instead. The best time is whichever time you will keep to every day.
How Long to Take It and Whether to Take Breaks
Shilajit is not a quick fix. The studies above ran for 8 weeks and 90 days, which is why many people use it as a course of a few months rather than for a few days. We cover course length, what to expect week by week and when to stop in a separate guide on how many days to take shilajit.
Many traditional users "cycle" shilajit, for example by taking it for a course and then pausing for a few weeks. There is no research showing that a particular cycle works better, so this is a habit rather than a rule. A break can still be sensible, because it helps you notice whether shilajit is actually making a difference. If you plan to use it long term, discuss it with your doctor, especially if you have any ongoing health condition.
Other Forms: Drops, Gummies and Honey Sachets
Resin is the traditional form, but it is not the only one. Here is a quick summary:
- Drops: liquid shilajit that you add to water. It is easy to measure with the dropper, so follow the label.
- Gummies: convenient and pre-measured, and they mask the bitter taste. They contain added ingredients such as sweeteners.
- Honey shilajit sachets: a single serving mixed with honey, useful for travel or for people who dislike the taste.

Who Should Not Take Shilajit and When to See a Doctor
Shilajit is not suitable for everyone. Do not take it if you are:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Under 18 (it is not for children)
Speak to your doctor first if you:
- Take medicines for blood pressure, diabetes, or blood thinning
- Have kidney disease, gout or high uric acid
- Have iron overload (haemochromatosis) or have been told your iron is high
- Have any long-term condition or are due for surgery
Stop taking it and seek medical help if you notice any of these red flags:
- Rash, itching, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing
- A racing or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or feeling faint
- Severe or persistent stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhoea
- Unusual dizziness, headaches or a sudden change in blood pressure or sugar readings
Also see a doctor if you started shilajit for ongoing tiredness, weakness or low libido and those symptoms are not improving. They may have causes such as anaemia, thyroid problems or diabetes that need proper testing. Read more in our guide to shilajit side effects and precautions.

FAQs
How many mg of shilajit per day should I take?
Most adults take 300 to 500 mg a day, which is a pea-sized piece of resin. The studies we know of used a total of 500 mg a day, so there is no need to go higher. Beginners can start with about half that for the first week.
Can I take shilajit twice a day?
Yes. One study split the dose into 250 mg twice a day, for example once in the morning and once in the early afternoon. Keep the daily total within 500 mg, and avoid taking a serving close to bedtime.
What is the right shilajit dosage for men?
The same range as for everyone else: 300 to 500 mg a day. Research in men used 500 mg a day, either as one serving or as two 250 mg servings. If you are taking it for stamina or sexual health, a check-up with a doctor is still important, because these problems can point to heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure.
Will a bigger dose give faster results?
No. Shilajit is concentrated, and taking more than a pea-sized serving is more likely to cause stomach upset than better results. Consistency over several weeks matters more than the size of each serving.
Should I take shilajit on an empty stomach?
That is fine if you feel well. If it makes you feel queasy, take it with or after breakfast instead.
What is salajeet khane ka tarika for a beginner?
Dissolve half a pea-sized piece in a cup of warm water or milk each morning for the first week, then move up to a full pea-sized piece. Use a clean, dry spoon and keep the jar sealed. Stop and speak to a doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.
