Some sellers advertise Karakoram shilajit. The name points to the Karakoram mountain range in Gilgit-Baltistan, in northern Pakistan. But a mountain name on a jar proves nothing by itself. This guide explains what the name means and how to check quality.
What Karakoram shilajit means
The Karakoram is a high mountain range that covers much of Gilgit-Baltistan. Shilajit collected from rocks in these mountains is often sold as Karakoram or Gilgit-Baltistan shilajit. Chitral House resin comes from Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Why the source is talked about
- High altitude and a cold, dry climate are linked to the traditional reputation of mountain shilajit.
- Buyers in Pakistan often prefer local resin because it is closer to the source.
- The source is a starting point. It is not a quality guarantee.
4 checks before you buy
- Lab report. It should name the batch and the lab, and show heavy metal results. See our lab reports.
- Grade. Ask whether it is semi-sun-dried or Aftabi. See the grades guide.
- Certificates. Look for food-safety and good-manufacturing certificates. See our certificates.
- Price that makes sense. Very cheap resin sold as mountain shilajit is often mixed. Compare with the current price list.
Karakoram vs other regions
Shilajit is also found in the Himalayas, Hindu Kush, Altai and other ranges. The differences in minerals depend on the rock and the processing, not only the name. Read more in imported vs local shilajit and Gilgit shilajit.
At home
Simple checks such as colour, smell and how it dissolves in warm water can show obvious problems, but they cannot prove purity. See the original vs fake guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Karakoram shilajit the same as Gilgit shilajit?
The names overlap. The Karakoram range covers much of Gilgit-Baltistan, so sellers often use the names together.
Is Karakoram shilajit better than Himalayan?
There is no fixed answer. Quality depends on the batch, the processing and testing.
How do I know the source is real?
Ask for a lab report for the batch and the seller's source details. Ours are on the lab reports page.
See the shilajit resin collection or try the 30g jar.
