Many buyers in Pakistan ask whether shilajit is halal. This guide explains what shilajit is, how it is collected and purified, and what a Halal certificate covers. It is not a religious ruling. For a ruling, ask a qualified scholar.

What shilajit is

Shilajit is a natural resin that seeps from rocks in high mountain areas, including Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan. It is formed over a long time from plant matter and minerals. In its raw form it is not an animal product.

How it is made ready for use

  1. Raw shilajit is collected by hand from rock faces.
  2. It is dissolved in clean water and filtered to remove stones and soil.
  3. The water is dried slowly, either by the sun (Aftabi) or in a controlled way (semi-sun-dried). See the grades guide.
  4. The finished resin is tested and packed.

What a Halal certificate covers

A Halal certificate looks at the whole process: the ingredients, the equipment, the cleaning and the packing. It tells you that the product was handled according to the certifier's standard. Chitral House holds a Halal certificate along with ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and GMP. See the certificates page.

Check the other forms too

  • Resin: the simplest form. Only shilajit resin is in the jar.
  • Gummies: check the ingredient list on the pack, especially for the gelling agent and sweeteners.
  • Honey sachets: check the list for any added ingredients.
  • Capsules from other brands: check what the capsule shell is made of.

What to ask any seller

  • Do you have a Halal certificate, and can I see it?
  • What exactly is in this product, besides shilajit?
  • Do you have a lab report for the batch? Ours are on the lab reports page.
